Tilers Arrive to do the Deck
and Staircase
![]() ![]() On Monday we met Mr. Tiler (Tito) and
Scooby (Roger), too many souls working so the boys came back Tuesday
morning. Within minutes they had the first tile down and tamped into place.
By five o’clock nearly all the deck was
covered.
![]() On Wednesday Scooby carried on with the deck.

batch of thin set for Mr. Tiler.
![]() ![]() Mr. Tiler doing some
early pondering a few hours later the upper staircase was coming
along. Bear brought the ladder indoors and set it up from one of the middle
lower stairs making it just a short climb to the banister outside our
bedroom.
![]() Friday saw Mr. Tiler rounding the
easy turn.
![]() Friday gave me the best view as Scooby was sticking the front face tiles up. After lunch Scooby began grouting and in double-quick time half
the grouting had been done row by row.
![]() ![]() Catching Mr.
Tiler in the act. Tito left the bottom three stairs untiled so we could
once again use the ladder indoors. At four thirty the boys were doing a final clean up. The deck looks super, really
super.
![]() After a days work the boys clean
themselves up - Scooby washing his legs.
![]() ![]() Saturday morning was incredibly hot so
Bear unrolled the canopy to stop the grout drying too
quickly. On Scooby went, once again row by row.
![]() I bimbled in at one point to find
Mr. Tiler looking cool with his shades on, when I
told him he graced me with a wonderful smile.
![]() ![]() ![]() By the end of the day Mr. Tiler had
finished the upper stairs, inner
and wall strings, began working on the wall string on the easy turn and bottom four
stairs. This meant that we could use the stepladder to cock our legs over
the lower bannister and step above the Coke bottle. Sadly, we had to say
farewell to Scooby but Tito we would see on the morrow.
![]() We woke on Saturday morning for our
first look at the finished patio. Mr. Tiler came early and cut all the tiles for the rest of the
job, unhappy with one of the uppers, off it came and was replaced. Such a
careful, steady worker who worked until late and we would see him again bright
an early on Monday.
![]() Early Monday morning Mr. Tiler
arrived with Melissa (not only his friend but also
the team grouter for more than ten years), Bear immediately thought that her
name was Stacey...... Overnight the kitchen tiles had dried and I felt the grout
was too dark, therefore too dominant for the staircase tiles. We caught Bossman
on his way to see us for our daily visit, he very kindly turned and went to the
tile shop. Meanwhile, I rang said shop and paid for a bag of ‘silver’ (pale
grey). Melissa was incredibly patient then got to work at once. Mr. Tiler very
carefully finished and both were being ‘hugged’ and thanked profusely by late
afternoon. Final pictures would wait until the grout was dry.
![]() ![]() ![]() On Tuesday morning we were thrilled
with the result (bottom, middle and top). We need to add a wood strip, paint the top grout
white to blend in to the walls and complete the bannisters to declare the job
complete but for now, we have a gorgeous, clean-looking staircase.
ALL IN ALL QUICK, EFFICIENT
AND VERY HAPPY CHAPS
