Bus Ride in the Cradle Mountain National
Park ![]() ![]() We arrived at the Cradle Mountain National
Park Visitor Centre, opposite our camp site, and went to gather information. Our
bus pass was free because we have our National Park pass, there was a bus
outside and we jumped on for a reconnoitre. We were lucky to have Jamie as our
driver, he was extremely knowledgeable [non of the other drivers we were to have
over the next few days said a word other than name the stops]. The bus took us
from the Visitor Centre to the Interpretation Centre two kilometres away and the
Snake Hill stop, Ronny Creek and finally Dove Lake, total journey ten
kilometres. Mabel can only go as far as the Interpretation Centre. The Cradle
Mountain National Park covers 1,612 square kilometres and was established in
1922.
![]() The Overland Track is one of Australia's most famous bush treks, situated in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania. More than eight thousand walkers each year complete the track in five to six days. Companies offer guided walks with huts to sleep in each night or own tents for the hardy. Officially, the track runs for 65 km from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair. However, many choose to add the hike along Lake St Clair as a natural extension, bringing the length to 82 km. The track winds through terrain ranging from sheer mountains, temperate rainforest, wild rivers and alpine plains all in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Note. Sadly, the Walls of Jerusalem National Park is currently closed due to a massive bush fire burning in the area, we would see it from Marions Lookout. Jamie, a retired SAS officer told us that they had to do the 82 km track, carrying a 25 kilo bergen, in exactly twenty four hours – ten minutes early or late, they would have to do it again....... We listened to all his information with interest. He said the park had gained World Heritage Status in seven categories, the only other to reach seven criteria in the world is Mount Taishan in China, [many others have two or like the Kathmandu Valley, three] – we have put the seven under the ALL IN ALL. We took pictures along the way, we stayed on the bus returning back to Mabel and on to our camp to decide which walks we would do.
ALL IN ALL FASCINATING AND
