En Route to South
Caicos
![]() Leaving the beautiful
beach on Grand Turk. We up anchored and left at
12:45
![]() We were anchored in 2.8 metres, we
turned and in a boat length were in 6.6 and another in more than Beez could
measure, like falling off a wall
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "Can I have a Gummy
Bear - No "Why" I'll have to chop you off a bit "OK" Obviously the sun
has had had an effect on the bears
![]() As
we approached South Caicos the fish factories in the
north came into view (the main work on the island) where they process fish and
conch.
![]() South Caicos looked very
flat.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() With a mile or so to go the sea
suddenly went from very deep to 11 metres in a very short distance, then 4.8.
Across the entrance to the bay (3 metres) is a "gateway", from left to right it
went long rock - gap - small rock - gap - South Caicos. We entered the bay
through the left channel and on seeing a couple of mono hulls and a couple of
power boats we were satisfied we could anchor safely. As we entered at half
five, we saw a new School for Field Studies and
thought we had arrived on a wealthy island - how wrong could we be. Back to the
task in hand. On went the forward facing sonar to help us ease out of the main
channel now 2.2 metres and cross the very shallow bit to find enough
depth to anchor. First time we set the girl eased back to a depth of
0.4, no good for the tidal height. The second attempt we settled in 0.9
metres and that was fine, Bear says we have to get used to this picking our way
over coral as we will be doing a lot of it in the Bahamas and we still have to
cross the Grand Bank.
![]() ![]() Bear had a
swim, checked the anchor - too chilly for me

ISLAND TO EXPLORE TOMORROW
