Final Week for the Boys

On Monday the boys arrived bright, breezy and wheeling in a very big boy tool. Cutie was soon cutting for Barry White. The tilers visited and we immediately loved them. Tito and Roger. I told them that soon they would have nicknames like the rest of the crew and Roger said he was known as Scooby. Easy Scooby and Mr. Tiler......... They told us it was way too busy and crowded to begin work today but they would see us on the morrow. (At the time Lord Ron came for his daily visit, as did Bossman. Add that to Barry White, Captain, Cutie and the two of us and it was standing room only on the deck, plus the tool pile......).

As Barry fixed the fence beams, Cutie primed the back of the uprights.

Meanwhile out front, Captain was getting ready the new left-hand car port post. Out back, fence taking shape.

I got busy painting upstairs and it was some hours later I got the call from Captain. He had fitted the new post. To be honest I was really upset, the job was a good one, but the concrete collar (designed to keep the termites from finding a new home...) had been originally discussed to repair the bottom of the old rotten one. What was the point of having new, beautiful wood post only to be cut off at the knees and for me to have to try and disguise a great big lump of concrete ??? By the following morning, after a sleepless night I hit the roof giving all the blame to poor Bear who had for the the first time, not consulted me. All the boys collected together to see my distress and it was agreed it was to be replaced. I apologised profusely to Captain.

By the end of the day we had a brand new fence on the right.

Tuesday morning saw Captain demolishing the balcony, leaving just the uprights. Mr. Tiler and Scooby spent some time measuring, laying a string line but by half past nine the first tile on the deck was in place. Cutie began clearing lots of detritus so the boys had a clearer space.

By eleven, we said farewell to the ’very big boy tool’. By the afternoon the deck tiling was coming along at great speed.

Captain prepared the risers ready for the new tiles.

Wednesday morning Captain began preparing for the new right-hand post and as he chipped away the old base found an active termite nest...... I have my suspicions about the car port roof beams so I called the company who will deal with the little baddies, they are coming to assess on Monday. Cutie painted the front facing wall of the downstairs balcony (lovely, neat work) ready for the boys to return the sun canopy to its place on the morrow. Barry White began building the gate to the dock.
Thursday, gate complete, sun canopy up and prep- done to replace the ugly left post.

Friday saw Cutie loading the rubbish on the truck, taking it away and returning to begin to load most of the tools. Barry White fitted the gate and Captain declared the posts were done. Super job. As I stood at the far end of the drive – the left post (that had the active termite nest and the right post with just a short concrete base that will easily be covered with my new chippings.

By half two we were saying our ‘official’ farewell to the boys (they will be back on Monday to fit the nav lights to the deck overhang and collect the tools left for the job. What a wonderful team, good fun and hard working. From left to right:- Cutie (aka Benji), Barry White (aka Baldwin) and Captain (aka Lashley). We sent them off bidding them a great and restful weekend with a case of Carib beer each. We will miss them.
