Sunday saw us leave Miffy and Rachel for a short but very overdue visit to Family Millard. Neither of us could have imagined meeting Jacob for the first time – the eyes are captivating. Behind them is a gorgeous (although at the moment full of cold) young man, full of spirit, enthusiasm and charm. Such a joy.

I had to admit to Oscar that I didn’t know anything about Ben 10, so he took me by the hand to his bedroom. On his door is the picture of us in Water World where we are pretending to hold a baby penguin. He pointed to grandpas face and said in hushed tones “He’s bigger here isn’t he”, pointing to his midriff. I stifled a giggle and had to agree in an equally sombre tone. That done Oscar showed me his transfers on the wall explaining what came out of the strap on Ben 10’s wrist, got his book and proceeded to show me all I needed to know about this young super hero. I have to keep reminding myself that this polite, well-spoken, tall and charming young man is not four until the end of April. Very Well Done to his mum and dad.

Soon enough it was time to build Batman a helicopter, Grandpa was enlisted to turn the instruction booklet pages but was sacked when he turned two at once. Dad, Martin helped with build assistant until Jacob had to go for his morning nap. Oscar had to put up with the constant interruptions of kisses from grandma. When I said I was a million behind, he just sighed and gave up his cheeks for more........

After lunch it was time to watch the next generation carry out a famous Millard act. A pile on. Bella the latest member of the family joined in and gave a good account of herself, this twenty-one month of springer spaniel has the sweetest temperament. Adopted from Woodside Shelter, she has made the family complete, many years of happiness to you Bella. The boys thought it was fun to see just how ticklish grandpa was. All too soon it was time to leave – for now, to move on to see the Millard Family. New dates in the diary was all that could shoehorn me out of the door.

Father and son similarity, next time I’ll get Martin to put a pair of his dads glasses on and get a picture of the three generations.
