Port Stephens Bimble
We jumped up and after chores went
ashore to walk to the Maritime Rescue office. Walking by Beez Neez, looking rather stylish and quite happy to
share the spotlight with a few tourists.
We started to walk across a park and
headed to a memorial to some early
pioneers.
At the top of the slope was a memorial to HMAS Assault.
We saw a
sign for the Port Stephens Native Flora Reserve and headed toward it.
Just then Katie Kookaburra went nuts in a tree above
us. Now I can prove I’m not completely mad, be careful
what you type next. No, wait.......
Tingha
(pronounced Tinker) and Tucker was an ATV children’s program that ran
from 1962-1970. The hostess was the English presenter Auntie
Jean (Jean Morton 1921-2012), she told us that T+T were koala bears. So
from a young age that’s what I thought they were, bears. Along with Tingha and
Tucker there was Willie Wombat, Grandpa Wombat, Kiki Kangaroo, Ermintrude Emu.
Uncle Pat was Pat Astley, the ATV continuity announcer. The postman was Pete
Murray – the well-known D.J., there was a one time special visit from Sea
Captain Ed, none other than Prime Minister Edward Heath and singing with Uncle Cliff (Richard) – never thought he would make it into
a blog. Perhaps the most important memory was Katie Kookaburra........hence,
since then they have always been Katie’s. Oh, that
explains a lot...........I understand now.
The Tree House Club. We all had the badge, obeyed the rules, all knew the words to the song
and had the record, written by Tony Hatch who also wrote the themes to Crossroads,
Neighbour and many others.
Come on nimble drawers, you’ve got the
flop but I’m not too sure where the Fosbury was...........
Huh.
At the bottom of the
hill we found a memorial to the American servicemen who
trained here in Port Stephens.
The little pyramid beside the main one was for the British Royal Marines and the location
of HMAS Assault.
We continued
along the one way street with bicycle and footpath, along the shore and Ooops – stuck on a
rubbish bin, we think this chap may have much to make up for.
At the end of the car park was a
marvellous sight. Chaps queuing in an orderly
fashion, waiting for bits thrown from the
filleting.
Just love the
expressions on these huge creatures.
It must be so frustrating to have such
a big beak, a prize and jealousy of a seagull with a tasty
morsel.
“Please, me
next”
A thief sees a chance but the victor runs faster.
After our visit to Maritime Safety, a
snack lunch and a bimble around the museum we walked back to the marina for a
photograph of Daniel Thain sitting at the
ready. Then we watched a smaller rescue craft being skilfully manoeuvred onto a trailer. Time for an ice
cream.
We saw this lady
against the jetty, a ‘for sale’ ticket on the side window. We had a look
in the estate agent and found the advertisement and healthy
price tag.
As we bimbled we
watched the chaps.
Perfect
landing.
Noisy birds as we have become used to.
ALL IN ALL A HAPPY
TIME
A NICE BEACHSIDE
