Bimbling around Fort de
France
![]() ![]() So much rain had fallen that Baby Beez was a perfect place for Skipper to wash out his
shorts, tee-shirt and Bill and Ben hat before emptying her. We braved the
elements to go ashore to explore.
![]() The city
of about 100,000 inhabitants is a stunning mixture of modern buildings,
colourful creole villas with wooden verandahs, and busy narrow streets. Full of
life, noise and colour in the daytime, Fort de France becomes almost deserted at
night. Savannah Park and the waterfront are being
redeveloped to incorporate a promenade that will be used for concerts, cultural
exhibitions and ethnic dinings. Improvements to enhance nautical activities
at Bais des Flamands and La Francais beach is also underway as is structural
work on Fort Louis.

Cathedral

Hall, the modern shopping area and the Municipal Buildings.

church high on the hill outside town. The tourist
information office (above red car) in the older part of the city.
![]() ![]() ![]() A picture hanging in the tourist
office shows a view of the waterfront in the early 1900's. Beez with the ominous
clouds over her and our favourite building the Schoelcher Library.
