More of Kathmandu on Our
Journey To and From the Cable Car
![]() We set off at eight in a taxi heading
to the city cable car, fourteen kilometres or just
shy of an hour away (thank you Google Maps). We took the opportunity to take
lots of pictures. In brief, Kathmandu stands at fourteen hundred metres above
sea level. The Metropolis is home to two and a half million in just under twenty
square miles. Until the fifteenth century Bhaktapur was the capital until
Kathmandu and Lalitpur were established. Nepal had a royal family from 1768
until it was abolished on the 28th of May 2008 (the subnationalities in October
of that year).
The ‘gateway’ to all tourism and
therefore the ‘cash register’ for much trekking money (some collected at the
airport) makes us wonder where all that cash goes to, certainly not on road
surfaces, especially as Kathmandu was ranked in the top ten rising destinations
in the world and the top in Asia. In fairness though, the city did suffer a
brutal 7.8 earthquake in April 2015 (4.9 in 2017 and 3.6 this
year).
The city, dissected by eight rivers,
is surrounded by the mountains of Shivapuri, Phulchoki, Nagarjun and Chandragiri
where we would ride the cable car from base to top station. The Kathmandu Valley
– Kathmandu, Lalitpur Patan and Bhaktapur are listed under one heading
“Kathmandu Valley – UNESCO World Heritage Site” with so many old temples,
palaces and antiquities.
