The Bartolomeu Dias Caravel
from Portugal to Mossel Bay
![]() As we left the replica caravel we saw
a set of pictures telling the story from setting sail
in Portugal to finding a permanent home here in the museum.
The Header reads: Placing a
Replica of the Caravel Bartholomew Dias in the Museum at Mossel Bay Using Dry
Docking Technology, Ancient and Modern. K.P. Mackie Pr.Eng., M.Sc (Eng); Capt.
E.C. de Sousa. In 1488 the Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Dias reached
the end of Africa and opened the sea route to the East. 500 years later, in 1988
the Portuguese and South African Governments co-operated to build a replica of
the caravel to re-enact that voyage. The caravel sailed out of Lisbon under the
command of Capt. Emilio de Sousa and, at the end of the voyage out, was left on
the slipway in the harbour of Mossel Bay, not far from the point where Dias
turned back to Portugal.
A museum had been provided about
a kilometre away, atop a 15 m high cliff, to house the caravel as a permanent
exhibit. The presentation below is a record of how dry docking techniques,
ancient and modern, were used to move the caravel to its final berth in the
museum. It was done at a cost of about 20% of the cost of using modern
engineering or rigging techniques.
Here is the set of
pictures.
