Our Sagarmatha
Flight
![]() It was a little harsh when the alarm
went off at a quarter to five, but no surprise that we were both awake and
dressed by the tie the room phone told us our taxi had arrived. Ten past five,
early for the arranged half past but by the time we settled it was twenty past.
Twenty minutes later we were bimbling through security at the Domestic Terminal
and there we stood until the Buddha Air desks opened.
![]() AT ten to seven we were sitting on a
bus beside our plane waiting for it to
have a ‘slosh down’. Meanwhile, a very excited group from Spain
kept the rest of us entertained.
![]() ![]() Bear posed
and just before seven we embarked.
![]() ![]() ![]() Settled and
excited. At seven we took off for our hour long flight – twenty minutes
to the roof of the world. Sitting along each side meant that Beds could have his own seat.
![]() The stewardess gave us a pamphlet that shows the names and heights of all the ladies in the
Him-Arr-lee-ahs (Nepali pronunciation and one that many use after being in this
special area of the world). Of the twenty named ladies, only one is less than
20,000 feet. From left to right:- Langtang Lirung 7234 metres (23,734 feet),
Shisha Pangma 8013 (26,290), Dorje-Lakpa 6966 (22,854), Phurbi-Ghyachu 6637
(21,775), Choba-Bhamre 5970 (19,581), Gauri-Shankar 7134 (23,405), Melungtse
7181 (23,560), Chugimago 6297 (20,660), Pigferago 6620 (21,720), Numbur 6957
(22,825), Karyolung 6511 (21,362), Cho-Oyu 8201 (26,905), Gyachung Kang 7652
(26,089), Pumori 7161 (23,494), Nuptse 7855 (25,771), SAGARMATHA 8848 (29,029), Lhotse 8516 (27,940), Ama-Dablam
6812 (22,349), Chamlang 7319 (24,012), Makalu 8463 (27,766) and slightly further
right Kanchanjunga 8586 (28,170).
![]() First peep
after about twenty minutes.
![]() Very soon we see lots of peaks lit by the sun.
![]() Phurbi-Ghyachu and Choba-Bhamre are our first identifiable
ladies.
![]() Another view showing just how the peaks are crowded.
![]() Bear loved this
view – like Yeti
footprints.
![]() Beds with THE
lady peaking out above his head. A classic moment for him. We all went
one by one to see her face on and wow.
![]() ![]() The typical
view of Sagarmatha is to see the small plume of cloud brought up by the
jet stream effect, our view was slightly messy but in
no way detracting from her splendour.
![]() On our way back Gauri Shankar
![]() ![]() High
terracing and coming back to Kathmandu. Wow,
back to our digs for breakfast and look at our pictures. Here are some and lastly the magnificence of the
Himalayas with Sagarmatha in the centre.
