To Pulau Jerejak,
Penang
![]() ![]() ![]() We left the shelter of Pulau Talang and headed out under a
very threatening sky, the local fishermen stop at
nothing.
![]() Many yachties see these brave souls as a complete nuisance, we see them as hard
working people who wave enthusiastically, earn a pittance and do a job many
would view as hell on earth / water.
![]() ![]() ![]() All shapes and
sizes puttered by, all waving as if we were best friends.
![]() The radio chirruped “Beez Neez, we
are Maritim Malaysia, what is the name of your
captain”. That done, the chap fought to find his English “Have you had any
problems with your vessel ???”, we assured him all was well and he bade us a
happy journey.
![]() After he had sped
off waving happily, causing quite a wake – the naughty girl, we twigged
that it is because so many vessels report problems along this stretch of coast,
mostly with fishermen. Our only problem was with a yacht, one minute it was
miles away, the next it was passing in front and zig-zagging to the point of
being a pest for the next three hours.............
![]() Across the shallows we saw Penang at 17:18.
![]() We rounded the corner and saw a sand moving girl.
![]() The bridge comes
into view.
![]() The impressive Second Bridge road looking
left.............
![]() .
.............looking right
![]() ![]() The straight
line crossing the map is the impressive Second
Bridge.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Going
under.
![]() ![]() Once under
we could see the one of the ‘S’ shapes.
The Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah
Bridge or Penang Second Bridge, E28
is a dual
carriageway toll
bridge in Penang, Malaysia.
It connects Bandar
Cassia (Batu
Kawan)
in Seberang
Perai on
mainland Peninsular
Malaysia with Batu
Maung on Penang
Island.
It is the second bridge to link the island to the mainland after the first Penang
Bridge.
The total length of the bridge is 24 kilometres (15 miles) with length over
water at 16.9 kilometres (10.5 miles), making it the longest bridge in Malaysia
and the longest in Southeast
Asia. China Harbour Engineering Co
Ltd (CHEC),
a main contractor for the second bridge was expected to start work on the second
Penang bridge in November 2007 and complete the project in 2011, but the
completion date was then postponed to May 2012, and later to February
2014. Construction started
in November 2008. To reduce the cost of construction, its design was then
modified to resemble the first cable
stayed Penang
Bridge. The bridge has been built with a large loan from the People's Republic of
China to
continue and maintain the economic relationship between
China and Malaysia. The
bridge was officially opened on 1 March 2014 at 20:30 MST and
was named after the fourteen Yang di-Pertuan
Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Muadzam
Shah of Kedah and
was assigned with the route number
E28.
The total estimated construction cost is RM 4.5 billion. Or 810.5 million pounds.
Dusk. Just beyond the bridge we tucked in behind Jerejak Island for the night.
ALL IN ALL A HAPPY LITTLE HOP LOVELY AND PEACEFUL
