Truong Son Martyrs’ Cemetery
![]() ![]() We arrived at our next stop to a fine rain and the day
was still incredibly dull. Somehow appropriate. The cemetery was commenced on
the 24th of October 1975 and was completed on the 10th of April 1977, it is the
largest in Vietnam. There are 10,263 graves – the capacity is 33,000, many
victims were not found, lost to bombs, mines or torrential
rain.
Truong Son Martyrs’ Cemetery is located at Ben Tat Hill in Vinh Truong commune, Gio Linh district of Quang Tri province. This is a major work to show the gratitude and honor of the Vietnamese state, army, and people to those who died in the name of national liberation and reunification.
Memorials.
Liet Sy meaning war soldier. Chua Biet – unknown. Many families used two fortune tellers at separate times, if they chose the same grave of their loved one, they took it as theirs and add a name below. Each grave has an incense burner and artificial flowers.
Bimbling through the graves we passed well tended foliage displays.
A small number are named and a very few have a picture of the fallen. We bimbled up and down the rows laid out by province. To the left unnamed to the right Quang Tri and Quang Binh.
One or two managed to look unique. Bear paying his respects.
We left boys and girls most in their early twenties. Someone’s sons and daughters.
ALL IN ALL PLEASED TO HAVE VISITED VERY LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE
