The Privately Owned Botanical
Gardens of Nevis
As soon as we entered
these gardens we could see how beautifully kept they are, the plantation house was originally built by the Blake family in
1834.
We saw Mrs
Douglas checking the grounds (seven acres) with her head
gardener (workers mostly Indonesian, where the family spent time and
loved)
The most amazing African
Sausage Tree, (Kigella africana, native to West Africa -
family Bignoniaceae)
Rainbow Gum
Tree (Eucalyptus degulpta, native to New Guinea and the Philipines,
family Myrtaceae) trunk gets more beautiful with age
We stopped to admire this chap fishing
when a gardener asked if we liked birds - Oh yes - "Come with
me"
Antillean Crested
Hummingbird, one of the tiniest there is
What a stunning surprise
- and to watch her wiggling - turning her eggs, in a rubber
plant. The friendly gardener thrilled in our thrill and was happy to pose to
show size.
ALL IN ALL AN OASIS OF
BEAUTY
VERY UNUSUAL - HIGHLIGHT THE
NEST
