SITIO
After our visit to Obidos we had time
to visit Sitio, high above Nazare, reached by the funicular that climbs 360
feet. All of Nazare can be seen and the sheer size of the town and beach. I have
done some very wordy blogs, this is going to be mainly pictures.
 
 Happy boy waiting to go to through to
the funicular which opened in 2001, on board and a photo of two passing. It is
open from 8 am to 2 am every day and runs every 15 minutes
  The beach, Nazare town and the
overhang that the nobleman would have gone over in the mist.
 The Capela da Memoria, a 12th century
chapel built to commemorate a miracle that occured in 1182 : while in pursuit of
a white deer in (said to be the devil in disguise) a nobleman, Dom Fuas
Roupinho called out to Our Lady when he realised he had chased the deer too
close to the edge. The Virgin Mary stopped his horse just in time from falling
off the cliff that was shrouded in mist. The tiles inside the chapel depict the
legend, and outside is a pillar with an inscription commemorating Vasco da
Gama's visit to Sitio after his voyage to India, giving thanks to Our Lady for
his safe return.
   Stopped for a cake, not like
Baiona, this cream tastes just like shaving foam. An advert in a pharmacy
window for after sting. Bear bracing himself in best Portugese to ask for
stamps.
 
 The town at the top has only tourist
shops and a few cafes. You see these nut sellers all over, the women dress
traditionally with brightly coloured pinnies. Typically my comment is "back a
bit", just before the overhang is an unfenced area, only a four hundred
foot sheer drop behind Bear.
 The marina off in the distance with a
fishing vessel just entering.
