We arrived for lunch in Manggar, the main welcome was from a local group of singers and dancers.

We sat to so much food and more kept arriving. Crab and fish soup – traditional for the area.

I pushed the tippy end of one fork tine into several dishes and each set my eyebrows on fire. The fish curry should have carried a hazard warning. There is little colour difference between local ketchup and hot sauce but a whole tongue explosion........ Everyone tucked in and all the men began to look as if their foreheads were leaking – Bear was more than beading...... I stuck with fried calamari, plain rice and water......Must get bigger and less of a wuss at this spicy malarkey...

Our trusty police escort had parked their boots and settled in the local way to enjoy their food.

Karel (Tehani-Li) accepted our gift from the Regent after he had given a brief speech of welcome. We all received a bag containing a fan, a fridge magnet and our lovely ‘ship-in-a-bottle’ – a traditional fishing craft. Then we settled to watch the dancers. They invited us to dance with them and then we were invited across the road to watch Antu Bubu – a ritual designed to rid the surrounding sea of the evil spirit who stops fishermen having success. A rich experience amongst the loveliest people.
