The road trip from Westport along the Buller Gorge to Murchison is rated as ‘a must do journey’. The morning began damp and by the time we saw the Buller River raindrops the size of sparrows were falling. The scenery without doubt is pretty special.

The road meandered along with the river.

We looked back toward the bridge we had just crossed.

A skinny bit of road that went under a spectacular overhang.

A sharp bend in the river with an island.

Looking back at the overhang, the rainclouds catching up once more.

The busy main road to Reefton.

We passed the disused station of Reefton and had an enjoyable stop at the town recorded in New Zealand history as the first to get electric street lights.

Out on the main road once more a few ‘one careful owners’.

Some really sharp bends and really strange to see the turning to Hamner Springs when we are on the other side of the island.

The Maruia River is a major tributary of the Buller River, flowing for eight kilometres before joining the larger river eight kilometres to the west of Murchison.

The rain held off as we stopped at the Buller Gorge, Bear found yet another sluice head. We had fun on the biggest swingbridge and then on to Murchison.

I so like to watch the swirling mist.

Here we are. Soon settled in a very pretty camp, all on our own. Bear plugged us in and a lady gave us a fly by.
