A Sail At Last

Alongside RSAYS, Outer Harbor Today I took a new friend, Michelle, out for some sail training. Michelle and her husband, Paul, have a yacht that they have owned for several years but have not had the opportunity to sail and Michelle has only limited sailing experience so she asked me for some training, with which I was happy to oblige, especially as I had not taken Sylph out for a sail for far too long. The day proved perfect with very light winds to start of with, which allowed for a couple of practice man over boards under motor. Then we set sail to a gentle breeze which freshened to moderate in the early afternoon. We practised several tacks and gybes, with Michelle sometimes steering and sometimes managing the jib sheets. Then, after enough training for the day, we enjoyed a relaxing coffee on the way back to the marina as Sylph looked after herself under the guidance of her windvane self-steering. It was a very good excuse to shake the cobwebs out of Sylph's rigging. And now that the winter race series is over, Sylph and I are free to head off when we want. Regrettably the last race was cancelled due to strong winds, so only four of the six races were sailed. However, I am pleased to report that Freedom won the series overall. The plan is to remain in Adelaide for a club general meeting on the 14th, then, as soon as the weather permits, we will start heading to Brisbane for my brother Michael's wedding in September. All is well. |
