Hogs Bay
Hogs Bay Position: 35 43.15 S 137 56.72 E We ended up motoring in the light airs yesterday afternoon to come to anchor off American Beach in Eastern Cove, Nepean Bay, Kangaroo Island at 1600. We enjoyed a peaceful night and then at 1050 this morning, after rowing ashore for a jog along the beach and a swim, we weighed anchor and again partly sailed and partly motored in the light and fickle winds to come to anchor in Hogs Bay off Penneshaw at 1238. The anchorage is exposed to the east and while the winds are light out of the SSE, a small swell is invading the bay causing Sylph to roll slightly. There is also a large passenger vessel, the Majestic Princess, at anchor outside of the bay, ferrying lots of tourists ashore and back again. All the boat movements, along with the occasional ferry coming alongside, is exacerbating the wave action in the bay and making Sylph's motion even more erratic. Still, or not still as the case maybe, looking on the positive side, at least the movement ensures that Oli and I retain our sea legs and forces me to keep good ship-keeping habits. Our mission here is to top up fresh supplies and I might have a pub meal before departing KI which, looking at the forecast, might be tomorrow. The winds will be from the south but, while that makes for a headwind, they will be relatively light so conditions should not be too uncomfortable for continuing on our way. Then on Thursday they will be freshening out of the west for a day or so, and I would certainly like to be out there to make the most of the favourable winds when they arrive. As always, we will see what the morrow brings. All is well. |
