Dead Souls
Alongside Ushuaia The mainsail will be here Friday. Jonathon will be here in Ushuaia with the engine parts on Wednesday, so I hope to have them by Thursday. Being mostly cold and windy today I have only completed a few minor chores. I have plucked up the courage to start reading Gogol’s “Dead Souls”. The introduction tells me that this book was supposed to be the start of a trilogy where Gogol was to use the Russian character to show the world the way to Utopia (my paraphrasing). The first book, “Dead Souls”, starts with a very bad character, Chichikov, and the next two books were to lead to his and the world’s redemption. But Gogol went insane, in hindsight perhaps not too surprising given the ambition of his vision, trying to finish the second book which he destroyed, and he never got a start on the third, but in the process he created one classic, namely “Dead Souls”. Only just started it, so we will see. Bob Cat: Oh good grief! There was something I forgot in yesterday’s entry, now what was it? Let me see, oh yes, that’s right . . . Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. |
