High Island

E As my last post indicated, my intention was to continue sailing overnight, however, as we were approaching High Island I noticed a vessel at anchor off its northern shore. I had not considered this as an anchorage as my cruising guide did not recommend it in anything but calm conditions. As we got a bit closer the vessel came up on AIS as Maya, whose crew I had met while at anchor at Lizard Island. I gave them a call on VHF radio and determined that they had anchored there the previous day and had found the anchorage satisfactory so I decided I would join them rather than continue bashing to windward for the night. And now here we are. It is a little bouncy but at this stage Sylph's motion is much better than what it was off Fitzroy Island last night. The wind is forecast to ease a little tomorrow and my revised plan is to continue on our way first thing in the morning. One minor concern I do have is that as Sylph took up her cable she did so with a sudden jerk. This often means the anchor has caught under a rock or maybe a coral head which may prove to be a problem when we come to weigh anchor in the morning. However, there is nothing I can do about it now so, with luck, we will get good night's sleep then if needs be sort it out tomorrow. All is well. |
