At anchor off Arch Cliff, K'gari, Hervey Bay
Wind: calm
Sea: calm Swell: nil
Weather: sunny, mild
We got to anchor off K'gari late yesterday afternoon where once Sylph was secured I decided to give myself a wash in the cockpit. While I was doing so I noticed a disturbance in the water which I was sure was sign of a marine animal of some description but was very surprised when a few moments later a small humpback whale swam up to the side of Sylph then swam underneath us. I was certainly not expecting anything quite so big. The cetacean circled, stuck its head up to have a look at me, then swam under the dinghy tied off to Sylph's stern before slowly making its way back in the direction from which it had come. It was a special moment and I was fortunate enough to catch it on video. For anyone interested you can see my clumsy camera work on Sylph's Instagram account (bobwilliams_sylph).
Today has dawned a flat calm with nary a ripple in sight and it is expected to remain that way until tomorrow afternoon. So, the plan is to remain at anchor until tomorrow when a SE breeze is forecast to fill in and we can continue sailing north.
All is well.
