Most of my time continues to be shared between the odd boat project and building the brig-of-war.
The boat job for the week has been refurbishing the boom crutch which had received some minor damage on our last short voyage to Brisbane. Repairs have been completed and improvements made to prevent similar damage in the future. The crutch has been reinstalled
and now just needs a bit of padding applied to it to protect the boom’s paintwork when it is resting in the crutch.
And work on the brig-of-war has been focused on the bow section with all the fancy trail boards and figurehead. In a bit of whimsy I have decided to name my brig
HMS Sylph (there have actually been six HMS Sylphs, two of which were brigs) and accordingly have designed a figurehead that suits the name, although is somewhat anachronistic for the ship type of the period. The bow work is now nearing completion with
just the grating to complete and a tidy up to the paintwork which is a bit rough at this stage of the build. While my workmanship cannot compare with the more dedicated long-term model builders I have been in communication with online, overall, given my circumstances
working out of the Squadron’s workshop with limited tools and my lack of recent model-making experience, I am reasonably happy with the standard I have been able to achieve thus far.
All is well.
