Woody the plant manager to the cannery lived up to the Kodiak reputation. We were extremely welcome to the plant and immediately invited to a spare ribs dinner with ice-cream. Yummy ....
Operation since 1917 this plant is the last remote plant in Kodiak. They processed 21 million pounds in 2015, including the production of 8 million cans plus frozen Salmon. Dunginess crab and salmon are the key harvest. The plant operates from May to August with 200 people (75% Philippinos and Hispanics). Wages are about $20 per hour up to 40 hours a week. Than overtime. Typical day runs for 16 hours. Totals a good pay. They are charged $8 per day for food and housing.
This area is prime for Salmom and rich in King Crab (harvesting not permitted).
After dinner we went for a plant tour. From butchering to canning to cooking.
Fresh Sockeye salmon goes for 95cs per pound. Cheaper salmon goes for 20cs per pound.
A special treat was the tour to the
Museum.
