Hej !

Varmt vatten i obegränsat flöde.

22012012 Bar-b-q

Ship has an all pervading smell of Penguins. Somehow despite our best boot washing the dreaded poo has got aboard not just on the boots but as know from our previous visits it clings to our clothing.

With scrubbing brushes and vacuum cleaners to the fore as we set about cleaning and disinfecting the inside and outside of the yacht. We finish in time to go ashore for our lunchtime invitation and are met by a little group of penguins on the shingle beach.

Climbing up the ten metre bank we then have to traverse a snow field and yet one more bank of shingle to gain the top level and the Base.

We are met by Base personnel, invited in to meet everyone (All 12) and offered the chance of shower which we seize with both hands. A run back to the yacht to pick up washing gear and our passport so we can get a station stamp as well as one of our stick on logo's to add to their visitors wall

It's very hot in the Base and the showers are scalding, what luxury. Freshly polished and scrubbed we are taken on a tour of the base and the Bar-b-q site. Here two suckling pigs are being cooked between a sheet of metal with burning timber on top and another fire below the grill that holds the meat.

All this under the watchful eye of a fearless enormous Skua that is eyeing up the whole proceeds, encouraged by one of the Chef's (the base doctor) who is throwing it titbits.

We find out the reason for all the stores on the beach. Apparently they only arrived three days ago and are still moving their supplies into the base via a wire strung from base level to the beach.

Lunch arrives, great chunks of meat, bread, mixed tinned veg, lots of drinks various and our wine. Fantastic, and during the meal a French tour ship arrives and their skipper is invited to join us.

Tonton never one to shrink from his duties is soon assisting them in their movie making and finding out all about their new ship which is only 8 months old. In the process he has managed to acquire a very nice baseball hat.

Eating has now moved on to drinking and the base is extremely well equipped with some exotic concoctions which we are invited to try. Tonton, having suitably chatted up the French skipper along with Urban and the base commander have been invited to a tour of his ship and disappear leaving us to our fate.

We're weakening when we notice its now nearly five pm and we have invited the commander of the base and any men who wish to come aboard on the way back from the ship. So we weave our way back to the dinghy to prepare for the next session and reciprocal hospitality.

On their arrival the Doctor makes a very nice presentation to Lars of a small dagger with the station crest on it and we reciprocate with a Swedish flag with the yachts name on it.

We manage to survive, just, though the base Doctor is a little the worse for wear when we pour him into the dinghy. The hospitality has been terrific and as if that wasn't enough when we drop them back ashore we are presented with a box full of snacks and food, including ready cooked Pizza. Is this the first Antarctic takeaway?
