The expedition rendered this historic site Speyside Water Wheel and Sugar Factory. “On the north-eastern tip of Tobago near the village of Speyside, one can see the ruins of a giant iron waterwheel that provided power for a prior thriving sugar plantation. Into the early 1900’s, the cultivation, reaping and processing of sugar cane was dominant. Rusting machinery and crumbled stone walls interspersed throughout the island are constant reminders of such days. Erected in the late 18th century or early 19th century, this machinery and others were fabricated in Scotland, and presently stands as a reminder of Tobago’s past.”
