Översegling från Marquesas till Tahiti

Leaving the Marquesas Islands

Now it is time to leave the Marquesas Islands after almost one month. We visited all the populated islands, six of them.

We visited lots of  villages and beautiful bays. In all we cruised approx. 240 NM in the archipelago.

Marquesas has its own soul and differs from the other archipelagos we have visited here in French Polynesia.

Beautiful green volcanic ilands. We have indulging in beautiful changing sceneries and in an abundance of exotic fruit,

(free and more often than not picked straight from the trees.) We have seen lots if Tikis (funny looking statues in stone or wood).

We have met lots of  genuin, nice, happy, giving, tatooed friendly locals. We have been charmed by how simple lives they still live.

Time seems to be standing still, they value a good life more than “things” . For us struggling  in the “must have” society it is a

bit difficult to understand some time.

One month feels right for us and we are now ready for new adventures. It is apparent to us that the few other sailors we meet (mostly French),

live in a slower pace than us. We stay for days and they stay for months and years??!!

January the 30th a new mainsail is ready for us in Papeete. From Fatu Hiva to the Touamotos the distance is 400 NM.

We are heading for Raroia. It is the island where Thor Heyerdahl and Kon Tiki stranded in 1947.

When we got there we were met by Tatiana, John and Richie who invited us to there party. It had apparently started already in the morning.

Music, singing and dancing followed in their kitchen. We got to taste some real Polynesian life, unpretentious and happy.

We “staggered” back to the boat before midnight (very late for us, we are normally in bed at nine)

The freezer have been filled with tasty Dorado, a favourite. A big one at 5 feet, new record for Dawnbreaker.

400 NM left to Tahiti. Early start today, 25th, and 70 NM to Makemo (we have been there before). A fresh breese from behind, finally.

Passing out through the reef  the boiling seas with strong current and overfalls. We remembered to close all the hatches this time.

Later we get a squall with a downpour and 30 knots of wind. We can enjoy a natural shower on deck and gets all salt washed off.

Gott!!

The weather changes fast but it is never cold. Spectacular sun- rises and settings.

We anchor with a full moon, it gets dark about 7. Up early tomorrow morning for fresh baguetts at the bakery.
