Hej !

Snön piskar oss i ansiktet.

06012012 Snow & Ice

We woke to a grey day and snow. The sun had deserted us and now we had real Antarctic weather with the temperature a crisply 3 degrees, dropping to 0.8 as the snow and wind increase.

We're heading to Port Lockroy inside the islands through the Neumayer Channel described in the guide as a narrow channel where steep glaciers tumble directly into the sea along the length of this narrow fjord.

Unfortunately, the snow storm we are sailing through, stricts our visibility and we can barely see both sides of the narrow channel. As we proceed the size and number of icebergs increases with us having to weave our way through the larger ones. Every now and then we come to fields of smaller "Berger Bits" blocking our path which we have to force our way through.

Interestingly, earlier "'Bergs" we encountered consisted of great blocks of snow that had fallen into the sea. Now we are encountering genuine "Ice" bergs of glacial ice.

One of the differences is the iridescence blue colouring and the snap crackle pop sound of the trapped gas in the ice escaping as they melt. Like sailing in a sea of soda water.

Turning into the bay at Port Lockroy with the research station located on one of the islands we get the now familiar fishy smell (putting it nicely) from thousands of penguins that seem to occupy every rock and island within sight.

We are not alone as the "Explorer" a cruise ship is anchored in the outer bay and our old friends "Spirit of Sydney" and "Australis" in the inner bay surrounded by massive snow cliffs on one side with rocky snow fields on the other.

We pass two large grounded icebergs as we approach our mooring spot so hopefully they shouldn't be a problem.

The anchors dropped and Urban disappears. Ten minutes later he appears with a steaming pan of "Glog" specially prepared for us by Christina, his wife. Similar to mulled wine is warms the cockles of heart a treat and certainly reaches the frozen parts.

An hour ago we put the cabin heater on which has done the trick as we can strip off our wet snowy clothing and get the circulation going. Peters' knocking up a curry, I've defrosted my fingers and hammering away ready for Lars to send it along with our daily check in notification to the Chilean Coastguard back at Puerto Williams.

We're in festive mood tonight, after all it is Friday (We think) so we will probably finish our game of "Mexican Train" Now we have new converts in Thomas and Urban and even Tontons' earlier resistance has now cracked so it's been quite interesting!
