During engine control at my nightshift day 3 at sea I found saltwater in the bilge. The source was easily tracked to the J.D raw water pump-again !!
This pump was replaced when on passage from Cartagena for a pump refurbished in Rhodes. Now it was leaking significantly but fortunately we had a new spare onboard that arrived to Portimao only weeks before.
I had no desire to start with replacement in the middle of the night so we arranged a bucket placed under the leaking pump that needed to be emptied 1-2times/hr and so we managed until sunrise.
Once everything prepaired for replacement we shot the engine down and drifted freely in the ocean swell.
Dora Mac with her paravanes behaved well and I went to work well avare of the fact that if I did any mistake endangering installation of the new (and then also the old) raw water pump we would be without engine in open sea.
The new pump was easily installed and J.D started nicely without any further leaks from the pump. Once under way again we had only lost two hours meaning landfall at midnight.
Working for hours in the heat of the engineroom gives the word sweat a new meaning. I also notice this from my drinking behaviour when the body needs to be rehydrated after work (and sweat).
