By August 13 we were all family gathered onboard Dora Mac in Bodö including my mother (but Felix missing). I came from a work weekend in Scotland and the rest of the family from Stockholm.
Bodö is the communication centre in this part of Norway and SAS flies here from Oslo or Trondheim with Wideröy propellerflights connecting to smaller villages in the whole Northland area. As seen from the flight picture many glaciers are passed while flying over this part of Norway.
Heading north we spent the first night anchored in Manshausen. Here a futuristic hotel has been built with cottages facing towards Lofoten and with large parts of the walls made of glass(google Manshausen hotel for pictures). In wintertime this is a popular hotel for northern lights watching and the area is well known for halibut fishing (kveite in Norwegian) among other ways by spear fishing.
Not having time to stay we headed over Vestfjiorden (30Nm) to Svolvaer which is the "capital" of Lofoten. Svolvaer is often the starting point for adventures in Lofoten and allthough not at all as charmy as many other smaller villages, all service is here.
