Heading north back to Lofoten you have to cross Vestfjord(50Nm). Since this fjord is open to the north Atlantic it has it´s reputation especially during winterstorms but also in summertime the weather can change fast. Many fishermen have lost their lifes in these waters especially in historical times and there´s no coincidence that the main monument in Svolvaer(capital of Lofoten) is a woman looking to the horizon to see if the boat of her husband returns from the sea(on the picture).
During WW-II (early April 1940) Royal Navy and the German fleet (Kriegsmarine) unaware of each other were heading for Narvik,in the bottom of Vestfjord,to secure the iron delivered by Swedish iron mines. After a severe storm on the North Atlantic both fleets arrived in Vestfjord in fog and the first real battle between the British and the Germans took place here.
I crossed the Vestfjord in beautiful weather with flat seas and made landfall in Kirkefiord, now a favourite in these waters.
