We did have some time over for other things than working on Dora Mac. One evening we went out to one of the local restaurants with live local music. The music (morna) is a nice mix of Portuguese fado and rythmic African music.
In the weekend we went with William,a taxidriver and guide who drove us around the island. The Cape Verde islands were initially uninhabited. Found by the Portuguese in the late 15th century African people were brought here to work. "The Green Islands" are not green at all anymore. Partly this is due to all goats brought here by the Portuguese and who consumed much of the vegetation creating dry islands. This has influenced agriculture which is only possible up in the more humid mountains and much of farming products must be imported. Interesting how humanity had strong ecological impact already in those days.
The sea is rich though. Not being overfished like the Mediterranean fish and various seafood is plentiful.
Driving up to the top of the highest mountain (750m) we could see Mindelo with a "roof" of Harmattan due to the enforced tradewinds constantly blowing this time of the year. Beaches are wild and beautiful and still being low season they are mainly visited by local people.
