Competing for our position in the peckingorder is perhaps the most important drive for the majority of us human beings. This goes perhaps especially for royalties.
The winterpalace is clearly a monument of this strong human urge.
On the picture is the Golden Hall with walls in gold and in the monters jewelry collected mainly by Katarina the Great.
Katarina the Great was the empress and ruler during the later part of the 18th century. In her collection are jewelry from Cleopatra-clearly a very strong status signal to other royalties on visit at the palace.
