When Albert Einstein created one of historys most famous formulas in the year of 1905, E= m x c2 the , the race for the nuclear bomb was inevitable. Forty years later the first atomic bombs completely destroyed the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
It seems as if some of us humans have it in the DNA ,to strive for fame, power and wealth, a human trait very well carachterized by wise men in the story of the Tower of Babel in the old testament. The story (in the book of Genesis) is a metaphor on human ego and hubris leading to catastrophy. The old Greek had their own metaphor on the subject in the story of Ikaros who flew to close to the sun, lost his wings and crashed.
Today the race for AGI (artificial general intelligence) is inevitable. The race is run by the same hubris and ego as described in those classic metaphors, by people who not only strive for power, wealth and fame, but also eternal life (integrate AGI with human).
No doubt this race will be faster than anyone can imagine and change the conditions for being human more than anything else ever in the history of mankind. Already today the foundation is laid with part of humanity having their reward system kidnapped. From history we learn that you don´t seem to be able to control humans by inflicting pain since it will ultimately lead to revolution and violence.
By inflicting pleasure though, it seems as if a large part of humanity will accept servitude .
Many scientists of today are concerned about the effects of the smartphone on the human brain and research warns of a dehumanizing effect.
Tomorrow we might be speaking to our twin who is an avatar, not be able to distinguish what is AI and what is human, and furthermore have parts of AI integrated in or on our body.
Then we don´t only speak of dehumanizing but also robotizing humanity.
The French nobelprizer Albert Camus whose authorship was focused on fighting dehumanizing development, must be turning in his grave.
