Fijian vs western life styles
wanted to see if I could buy some fish, or fresh fruit.
I finally found a woman who took me to the shop keeper and he opened the
shop for me. I was glad to find eggs and I also bought some crackers and
"Marie cookies". No fruit or veggies though.
I continued walking to the beach where children were happily playing. They
saw the crackers in my bag and pointed at them, so I gave the cookies to
Later I met some women that invited me to drink lemon tee (really good!)
and offered me to buy some homemade bracelets and necklaces. I did buy
some of the stuff just to be kind.
Back to Tarita, it turned out that the eggs were rotten.
The day made me think about the differences between our western world and
the Fijian life. I felt spoiled living my safe life in which I do not have
any material needs. Food, water, nice dinners on Beach resorts are all
parts of our western lifestyle. Fijian life is so simple, dinner can
consist of cooked kasawa root. Industrial products are luxurious, no TV,
computers, or radio. But Fijians can really dance, sing and they laugh all
the time... Something to think about?
