This area of Norway is famous for it´s unpredictable weather. Allthough storms are infrequent in summertime, in winter strong storms and sometimes hurricanes(this winter they measured 135kts of winds on one of the bridges in Lofoten) are part of living here. Subsequently being lost at sea was a common way of dying in the old times with a population completely dependent on what the sea had to offer. At the same time with a prosperous marine life, starving was not a threat to the population who have lived in this area for many thousands of years fishing, farming, and whalehunting (which they still do).
Cruising here you notice weather changes all the time and as seen on the pictures the sky can look inviting in the afternoon with dark skies and heavy rain only some hours later.
