A British/Dutch naval force gained control over Gibraltar 1704 and it has remained under British control ever since. During the second world war it was obviously a very strategic point giving the allies control of the entrance to the Mediterranean.
The Germans together with Italian forces and supported by the French Vichy regim attacked Gibraltar several times during the last world war but with no success.
Today there are still British forces in Gibraltar but it`s not considered being of such strategic importance anymore. Spain has persisted on it`s ambition to regain control over Gibraltar but it`s inhabitants vote in vast majority for remaining under British control. With Brexit this sensitive question has been brought up in daylight again.
Nevertheless walking up to the cliff is a very nice 3 hour walk and with a great view over to the African continent.
