Upon our return from Marrsaxlokk we decided to go to Grand Harbour located south of the Valetta peninsula (Marsamxett with RMYC and Tax Biex marina is on the north side of Valetta).
Grand Harbour used to be the major naval base for Royal Navy until Malta had their freedom 1979. During the second world war Gibraltar and Malta were the two major navalbases for the British fleet.Due to it´s strategic position and to secure the supply lines for General Rommel in the North African war,the Germans decided to occupy Malta. Allthough bombed daily for a year (more bombs were dropped on Malta than during the Blitz of London) the Royal Air Force/Navy and most of all the heroic people of Malta, withstood the German terror and the island remained under British control throughout the war.
The marina in Grand Harbour is nicely located with a short ferrytrip to Valetta, but the price for Dora Mac was 107 Euros ex VAT and electricity per night. That´s like an exclusive hotelroom in Stockholm, allthough here breakfast is not included.
