Passing through Risöyrenna (again rewarded with a northsetting current) leaving Vesterålen you come out to a 60Nm stretch of open water between Andöya and Senja. In wintertime when storms are frequent there´s an option also to go east of Senja which is a route much more used and protected from the sea. As seen from the pictures my passage was in flat calm waters with the mountains drenched in sun and snow.
The continental shelf is very close to Andöya which is the reason for Andenes on the northern tip of the island,to be a whale center for the whole region. Especially sperm whales feed in the waters on the continental shelf and are found frequently in these waters.
Senja on the other came into media focus a couple of years ago when all whales appeared here in the spawning period. Now as mentioned before on this blog, the whales have moved to Skjervöy further north.
Except for all the fishing communities on the westcoast of Senja there´s also a small port on the northwest coast of the island called "Hamn i Senja".
Here´s a well protected small harbour with a resort mainly used by skiers. Randonee skiing is a growing sport in Norway and Senja is supposed to have some great spots. That´s one of the reasons for my being here and as seen on the last picture passing the westcoast of Senja, there´s a lot of snow in the mountains.
