GPS tracking was based on our IridiumGO unit which we were running twice a day. We have an external antenna for Iridium communication but for GPS signals the unit needs to be under the free sky.
We never managed to purchase a transceiver unit for our SSB radio now only receiving but through our Starlink we were online 24/7.
If you have an Iphone 14 or later (or some of the latest Samsung Galaxy) you can make phonecalls with good quality as well as send/receive textmessages. We have a Starlink Mini and subscribed to Mobile Priority. It worked flawless during the whole passage with a speed not very different from home and we never had any dropout. To celebrate halfway we watched a Netflix movie (obviously with regular watch) with good quality and no interruptions.
Another question is if you really want to have internet onboard while doing an ocean crossing. To press the question further-"do you want to be close to nature, watch stars, not miss a whale passing by,or do you want to be able to watch movies ?"
Our experience is that once well working internet is onboard you will use it a lot, also out in the ocean. Partly because society of today expects you to be reachable within days, but also because it´s an easy amusement.
We also used it to communicate regarding technical issues as well as ordering spare parts to Antigua. The value of that is indisputable.
