Dominica was inhabited by the Arawak indians who are believed to originate from the Orinoco river in South American mainland. Guided by the south equatorial current they populated many Caribbean islands long before christ but in the 14th century they were replaced by the more agressive Carib tribes.
Columbus was the first European to lay eyes on Dominica in November 1493,during his second voyage. Since the island was discovered on a Sunday , he named it Dominica.
Due to fierce resistance from the Carib indians the Spanish never colonised Dominica but the French made it a colony in the early 18th century. Since Britain and France at this time were the main colonial competitors in the area, Dominica passed between French and British rule seven times. Ending up as a British colony,Dominica gained independence 1978.
The inner parts of the island is djungle and rainforrest. No wonder you find both parrots and boa constrictor snakes here. Moreover it is a mountaineous island with lot´s of waterfalls and there are seven active volcanos today. From the volcanos you find sulphur springs and hot springs well worth to try out for a bath.
On the east side of the island the Carib indians still live. As far as we were told they are the only Caribs left after meeting the Europeans only five centuries ago.
The interior of this island is not to be missed.
