The prevailing wind in the Madeira archipelago is from the NE quarter. Subsequently all major anchorages are on the southcoast of the islands. On the southcoast of Madeira there are 3 marinas but if you have not booked in advance chances are small they will have any place available which means anchoring is the major alternative.Since there´s an all time swell from the North Atlantic this can be a rolly business and on Dora Mac we were very grateful for having paravanes. We first anchored some nights in Enseada de Abra on the very east corner of Madeira before heading for Funchal where you anchor just east of the entrance to the port. The anchorage is deep with spots of sand and lot´s of rocks. Moreover it´s exposed and the dinghyride to the marina (where they allow you to leave dinghy without charge)is 20minutes, all in all a fair weather anchorage only.
Just before entering the marina you pass a copy of Santa Maria, the biggest of Cpt Columbus three ships that sailed to the New World 1492. Their return to Europe was in January (!) and of course they caught a storm around the Azores separating the ships allthough they all managed. Watching an exact copy of Santa Maria it´s hard to understand how these ships could manage a winter storm on the North Atlantic.
Once in the marina you can leave the dinghy by the office and walk into Funchal immidiately surrounded by tropical vegetation.
