Founded by the Phoenicians around 600B.C it´s one of Europes oldest cities. Later it was ruled by the Carthagians but after the punic wars (when Rome defeated Carthago) it became a haven for pirates until finally the Romans got fed up and conquered Ibiza. Of course later came the moors and in the 16th century it came under rule of the Kingdom of Aragon (later Spain).
The old town is beautifully located on a hill by the sea permeated by wings of history, charmy restaurants and bars. There are also some interesting museums and like several other places in the Mediterranean,Ibiza city claims that Christopher Columbus was living here (Cristobal Colon),allthough now proven by DNA tecnology that he was from Genoa, current Italy.
