Having only a short window of descent weather we needed to depart early and still expected to make landfall at the onset of gale winds from the south after a 24hr passage.
Clearing out of Tunisia went smooth again starting with harbour police and ending with customs.
This time customs was represented by two female officers who came to search Dora Mac in a very polite and sympathetic way.
After clearance we headed to sea and the first 6-7hrs were flat seas but once out in the strait of Sicily we were hit by the winds from northwest and strong currents from the strait forcing us to launch paravanes and slowing us down to 5,4kts.
Here were also lot´s of Tunisian fishing boats and suddenly Mercedes alerted me that one of them was heading straight on us.
By a combination of turning heavily to port as well as full throttle we managed to avoid collision.
The incident gave bad taste since it appeared to be a deliberate attempt of collision...
Making landfall in Sicily still in darkness the wind started to pick up to galeforce but we managed to come into protection from the island of Favignana (Egadic Islands) before any disturbing seaway. In flat waters in leeward of the main port in Favignana we retrieved the paravanes at the same time as dawn was approaching. We made it just in time before worsening weather with 40kts of southerly winds in the evening predicted.
