Next thing we wanted to try out together was the parachute anchor. Stored in a dunnage box on foredeck we took it all out and launched the whole set. It was working well and as previously mentioned would be our first line of defence in heavy weather. Moreover the parachute anchor can be used to rest, get more controlled circumstances for a demanding repair at sea, basically any time when circumstances demand not being under way.
Once the whole parachute was retreived we also sailed Dora Mac (again broadreach 22kts) with a partly furled headsail and full mainsail.
Without help from John Deere Dora Mac, with these favourable circumstances, maintained an average speed of 4,1kts and the autopilot had to work quite a lot. All in all a bit disappointing but a fully furled out headsail would probably have given better result.
Finally we ran the boat on our secondary autopilot. It´s a complete independant Comnav system with it´s own compassource (fluxgate instead of GPS compass) and it´s own pumpmotor and steering cylinder working on the tiller arm. It has very few hours on it and was working fine.
Anyone interested in how to launch parachute anchors, we did a video on it years back while in Norway.
