Maon (or Mahon in English) is on of the worlds deepest harbours and the most protected harbour in the Mediterranean. That´s not necessarily good from the native populations perspective since a big and very well protected harbour is of military strategic importance.
Subsequently Mahon has been under rule of all different masters of the Med including the British and the French. Even the vikings raided Mahon.
Mago Barca ,the brother of Hannibal Barca (the Carthagian who almost defeated the whole Roman empire with his elephant army) gave Mahon it´s name and being under many different powers, it was not until early 1800 that it came back under Spanish rule.
During the Spanish civil war it was held by republicans and heavily bombed by Franco´s airforce as well as the Italian airforce until finally defeated.
Today Mahon remains a beautiful city only 10mins dinghy ride from our anchorage. The dinghyride goes through the huge natural harbour with the coastline infested with beautiful seaside houses. Beside one of the marinas is a safe dock for dinghys very close to the centre.
Great to be back in the land of Estrella Galicia
