Rödöya is the mainisland in one of all archipelagocommunities on the Helgelandcoast. As such it has connections with passengerboats to the mainland and the school was located on this island serving the whole island community. Today the schoolhouse is a restaurant and on the menu when we arrived was kveite.
Kveite (halibut) is frequently found on the sandbottoms of this archipelago and in some areas they are brought up by spearfishing. Being a large flatfish sometimes reaching several meters in size I guess that could be quite a struggle.
Walking to the mountaintop of the island reaching more than 500mtrs above sealevel you have a fantastic view all the way to the mainland and Svartisen glacier.
Today Rödöya is a popular place for mountaindiving in wingsuits.
