During watches in darkness we always use the radar for surveillance. We have it on the 24Nm scale and it works well to identify targets down to smaller sailboats. It´s a reasonably modern broadband radar and so does most of the "radarwork" by itself.

Moreover when we are alone on watch we always carry our PLB 3 (personal locator beacon). In case of man over board,it transmits both AIS signals (range around 4Nm) to the mothership visible on both radar and chartplotter,as well as 24hrs transmitting Mayday to the CospasSarsat satellitesystem where the device is registered. Still to handle man over board out in the ocean is extremely challenging and with a high mortality.
