Gotland is Swedens biggest island and a very popular destination for vacation in summer. Moreover it`s capital , Visby, is a very charmy medieval city founded by the German Hansa (a medieval powerful German trading company) in the 12th century.
We decided to go there from the St Anna archipelago which meant an 80Nm open sea passage. Due to different gales coming and going an overnight passage between the gales and with a moderate seastate was our best option.
Heading to sea through a beautiful archipelago in sunset we came to open sea with old disturbed seas making paravanes necessary.
Traffic during our passage was very scarse but strangely enough both ships we met were on collision course. One of the ships called us on VHF concerned of the fact that our mutual CPA was zero.Approaching us from starboard we altered course passing aft.
Making landfall in Visby in darkness early morning we took in the paravanes and headed for the guestharbour where we where met by a terryfying surprise (see next post ).
