Aruba from a cruisers perspective

We did not like Aruba as a cruising destination.

The island is dry and dusty with only cactus growing, and it´s located in a belt of constant enforced tradewinds making it a windy place.

The only anchorage we found attractive was Arashi Bay on the north peninsula. The island is very commercialised for American tourists with Oranjestad (the capital) being an artificial  setting full of shopping malls with luxury brands and Starbucks,McDonalds, Pizza Hut,KFC, etc, are all over the island. Moreover Aruba is the most expensive island so far in our cruising life. This is of course the cruisers perspective but if you come for a week spending your time with all inclusive on a resort at Eagle Beach it´s all very different. Beaches and hotels are high standard and expensive for a week is more bearable.

In our opinion the only reason for bringing your boat to Aruba spells Varadero Aruba. This marina/shipyard is out of the hurricane belt,it´s well managed and organised, and prices are reasonable for being located on such an expensive island. We left Dora Mac 4 months on the hard of Varadero Aruba and had antifoul done by the shipyard. Allthough expensive the work performed was of good quality and haulout/relaunch professionally performed. The manager (Cpt Paul),Rishi head of technical services and Judith in the office are all very helpful and good to deal with.

Without Varadero Aruba and being out of the hurricane belt, there´s no reason to go to Aruba with your boat.
