As mentioned before there´s no place in any marina if not booked long time in advance which means staying at anchor is your only option while cruising Madeira. There´s a more or less constant swell which makes many boats roll uncomfortably (we were lucky to have the paravanes) and allthough the prevailing winds are from the NE quarter, in leeward on the southcoast of Madeira, there are often local winds from the south. If you want to visit Funchal (and don´t have a place in the marina) Enseada de Funchal is your only option which means anchoring just east of the entrance to the port. Depth is around 15mtrs and bottom is sand with large areas of stones. With local winds from all directions you have to expect to swing on your anchor in all directions which in turn means chances are big you trap your anchor chain around rocks. This happened twice during our 5 days anchored in Enseada de Funchal and the first time it took me half an hour diving to unwrap the chain from all rocks it was trapped around . The second time ,we were on our way to depart for Isla Selvagem and the Canaries, and this time was worse. The wind was blowing 20-22kts from SW right into the anchorage putting a lot of strain on the anchorchain. That meant Mercedes needed to manouver Dora Mac by engine/bowthruster to release strain on the chain while I was diving, again sorting all wrapped chain out from the rocks. We managed but it was not a comfortable situation. There are better anchorages on the southcoast of Madeira and then renting a car to see Funchal is perhaps a better option.
